How Exam Scoring Works

Understanding how your practice exams are scored helps you interpret your results and focus your study time where it matters most.

Basic Scoring

Each question is worth one point. Your raw score is the number of correct answers divided by the total number of questions, expressed as a percentage. For example, answering 72 out of 90 questions correctly gives you an 80% score.

Domain Breakdown

Every question is mapped to a specific exam domain (or objective area). After completing a practice exam, you will see your score broken down by domain. This is the most useful part of your results — it shows exactly which topics need more study time.

For example, a CompTIA Security+ practice exam might show:

  • Threats, Attacks, and Vulnerabilities: 85%
  • Architecture and Design: 72%
  • Implementation: 68%
  • Operations and Incident Response: 90%
  • Governance, Risk, and Compliance: 75%

In this case, you should focus your next study sessions on Implementation.

Passing Scores

Each certification has a specific passing threshold that mirrors the real exam:

  • CompTIA A+: 675-700 / 900 (approximately 75%)
  • CompTIA Network+: 720 / 900 (approximately 80%)
  • CompTIA Security+: 750 / 900 (approximately 83%)
  • AWS CLF-C02: 700 / 1000 (70%)
  • AZ-900: 700 / 1000 (70%)

Simulator Mode uses these thresholds to give you a pass/fail result.

Performance-Based Questions

Performance-Based Questions (PBQs) may be weighted differently than standard multiple-choice questions, just as they are on real certification exams. See What Are PBQs? for details.

If you have an account, all your exam scores are saved. You can view trends over time on your dashboard to see your improvement across attempts.

Tips for Improving Scores

  1. Focus on your weakest domains first — they offer the biggest score gains.
  2. Re-read explanations for every question you get wrong.
  3. Use Weak Area Drill to practice only the topics where you are struggling.
